- Body text at 17px
- Not 16. Most of the people reading this are between 40 and 65 and are on a phone. Type scales with the viewport and respects the text size set in the browser or the operating system.
- Measured contrast, not estimated
- Every colour pairing in the stylesheet carries its computed WCAG ratio in a comment. Body text sits at 14.83:1, muted text at 5.86:1 and both button styles above 6:1 — all past the 4.5:1 threshold, most past 7:1.
- Keyboard first
- Every link, button and menu control is reachable by keyboard in a sensible order. Focus is never removed: a three-pixel outline follows focus, and it switches to amber on the dark footer so it stays visible there.
- A skip link
- The first thing in the tab order on every page jumps past the header straight to the main content.
- Structure that means something
- One h1 per page, headings in order beneath it, real lists for lists and real description lists for term-and-definition pairs. Breadcrumbs are a navigation landmark and the visible trail matches the structured data exactly.
- Reduced motion honoured
- The only animation on the site is a slow drift on the front-line divider. Under a reduced-motion preference it stops, transitions collapse to zero and smooth scrolling is switched off.
- Decoration marked as decoration
- The front symbols, pressure bands and isobar washes are drawn in CSS and hidden from assistive technology. Nothing that carries meaning is conveyed by colour or by a graphic alone.
- No JavaScript dependency
- One small script toggles the mobile menu. If it fails, the navigation renders as a plain list of links and the whole site remains usable.
Where we know we are not perfect
The site targets WCAG 2.1 AA. It has been checked by hand — keyboard traversal, screen reader pass, 200 percent zoom, and contrast computed rather than eyeballed — but it has not been through a third-party audit. The region pages carry numbered check lists and the guides carry three-phase sequences; both reflow to a single column on a narrow screen, which keeps every step readable but makes comparing two of them side by side harder on a phone than on a desktop, and we have not solved that yet.
